This is an awesome pic of the little known Nissan 360 event that happens every few years, and they bring together many different Nissan models from all different markets that were never sold together. Just pretend the Infinitis aren’t here. And that Datsun.

One of my favourite past times is to go to the websites of car makers from other countries and see what sort of interesting vehicles they sell. I love seeing what old models they continue to sell new in other places. Personally seeing every single new model they sell compiled into one list is quite satisfying.

Nissan has become the enemy of the enthusiast over the past decade or so, with its infamous CVTs, certain dated products, lukewarm styling, a focus on high volume, low quality products and a general lack of of direction. Apparently Nissan will be seriously cutting models soon, so there lineup may never be as big as this again.

Lukewarm Take: I really like their V-motion grille. It’s distinctive, and the U-shape is loose enough that it can easily be played with without every model looking identical, which Infiniti suffers from.

Kinja'd!!!

Dayz Highway Star on the left, Dayz on the right.

Their smallest car is a kei car, a rebadged Mitsubishi eK. The thing about JDM cars is that they are available in alot of different styling variants, such as Highway Star, which appears to be a bolder look compared to the more conservative regular version.

Kinja'd!!!

Another is Bolero, which appears to give the car a more cutesy look.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Hey the Micra is actually good looking now! Seems to have learned their lesson from the dreadful Indian built previous model, this one is made in France at a Renault factory.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Also the NISMO versions, probably the most lacklustre performance trim of any manufacture.

Yet the new K14 Micra seems to be European only, with the rest of the world continuing to get the old K13 model, even Japan. An exception is South Africa, which sells the new Micra alongside the older version, where it’s named Micra Active.

Kinja'd!!!

Interestingly in India, the Micra Active is the name for a slightly cheaper alternative of the K13, with different styling (aka a slightly restyled version of the pre-facelift bumper).

Kinja'd!!!

And in Japan, you can get the Bolero version. In the past, I guess Bolero wasn’t necessary the “cute” version, but more like the British pastiche version. I guess Mitsuoka has filled that gap in the market.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The old Versa was the one of the cheapest, most miserable cars ever, while this new one looks decent, as essentially a Micra 4 door.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Oh shit is it still here? Um, hey Versa! Looking good! What was known as it’s original name Latio in Japan, it soaked up the nameplates in various markets of many different, separate model lines: the Versa, Almera, and Sunny, into one. Oh and in Mexico, it will be sold alongside the new Versa, where the old one is renamed the V-Drive, which is a name so bad, I don’t wanna make fun of it.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

For a bit bigger size, you can get the new Sentra, which looks decent now.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Don’t mind me parking the car in the living room.

The old Sentra is still sold elsewhere around the world though.

Kinja'd!!!

The Japanese never got the facelift though.

Kinja'd!!!

And China has an electric version, looking very much like a Leaf with a trunk.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

This is essentially a weird looking, budget alternative to the Slyphy for China.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The 2nd gen Tiida is a Slyphy-based hatchback, used to be sold in alot of other places as the Pulsar, but now is a Taiwanese exclusive. The 1st gen Tiida was also sold as the original Versa.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Easiest way to tell the difference is that the headlights aren’t triangular and the flame surface kink is above the door handles, not underneath.

It may not look like it, but this is a different car from the other Tiida, despite their painstaking efforts to make them look identical. It uses the CMF platform also used for the Qashqai, X-Trail and pretty much any Renault bigger than a Mégane, compared to the Slyphy base of the other. Originally sold in Europe as the Pulsar, it is now a Chinese exclusive, in fact this Tiida replaced the one above in China.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

No longer looks like a frog, but I’m more dissapointed about that unfortunate charging door placement. Also has a Nismo version.

Kinja'd!!!

There’s also the Autech styling package, which I guess gives a more premium look.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The Infiniti G-Series/Q50 have been rebadged Skylines for the past few generations, except the current gen Skyline confusingly had Infiniti badging in Japan ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ), yet weren’t directly referred to as Infinitis or Nissans, but just Skylines? I’ve heard they wanted to slowly introduce Infiniti to Japan, but were too chicken to jump fully in ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ), and I don’t know if you heard, but apparently the Skyline name is a big deal. Anyways, its back to being a proper Nissan now.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Not a bad looking car, but I can’t tell the difference between it and the new Sentra.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

AKA the last generation Altima, still sold outside America and China. Although discontinued in Japan, these functioned as the cheaper mainstream alternative to the upmarket RWD Skyline. But like the Slyphy, it was never facelifted in it’s home market.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The whole Skyline-Infiniti thing applies to the Nissan Fuga and the Infiniti M-Series/Infiniti Q70 as well, with a recent update bringing the Nissan badging again, although the rest of the styling is unchanged.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The crappy FWD North American counterpart to the Fuga.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The Cima was the name of one of Nissan’s old flagship saloons, but was discontinued, and indirectly replaced by the smaller 1st gen Fuga. However the name was brought back as the LWB version of the 2nd gen Fuga (aka the Infiniti Q70L). Unlike the Fuga, it never got the Infiniti badges in Japan, and always kept the Nissan badges. Apparently will be discontinued soon.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Something, something old......

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Something, something old....

Kinja'd!!!

The GT-R NISMO, arguably the only NISMO worth caring about.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Dayz Roox on the left, Dayz Roox Highway Star on the right.

Something something..... Oh! This is a mini-minivan kei car that serves it’s role as a bigger version of the Dayz we saw earlier. It’s a rebadged Mitsubishi eK Space.

Kinja'd!!!

Once again the cute Bolero version, and the Rider trim, with it’s ballin’ fat chromed badgeless grille.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The Cube is still on sale in Japan only, completely unchanged when it left export markets, but will be finally be put to pasture in February 2020.

Kinja'd!!!

The Cube Rider.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Plus Nismo. I thought it was ironic it lasted in North America two years longer than in hatchback friendly Europe.

The Note was killed in Europe and America (as the Versa Note), but turns out it’s actually the best selling car in Japan. I always thought it was the Corolla, or some kei car, but nope. It’s gotten a new lease of life with a very popular series hybrid available, called the Note e-POWER, where it has a 1.3 litre petrol engine to solely generate power for the battery.

Kinja'd!!!

In addition, there’s the C-Gear “active crossover lifestyle” version, and the Autech version.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The Livina is a slightly better looking !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (puke warning if you click that link). It’s like, trying to be an SUV, but is failing miserably.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Rocket beetle!

The original Grand Livina was essentially a long wheelbase 7 seater 1st gen Note, and a shorter 5 seater version was offered as the Livina, which !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! The new Livina is 7 seater only, yet ditches the Grand prefix. The old gen is still on sale in Taiwan, presumably as tooling has yet to be switched over to the new gen. Specifically, the Livina X-Gear, the plastic cladded crossover version, which has been renamed just Livina.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Serena on the left, Serena Highway Star on the right.

The original Serena was notable for being a front mid-engine, rear wheel drive van, but since then it has become a conventional front-engine, front wheel drive minivan.

Kinja'd!!!

The Serena Autech. There used to be a Nismo version too.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Nissan’s big boi minivan, the Quest’s cooler brother, nemesis of the Toyota Alphard! It’s quite old now, introduced in 2010.

Kinja'd!!!

The Serena Rider. There used to be a Nismo styling package of this too.

Well that’s it for part 1, please keep comments to how “making the Nissan IDx will single-handily save the company” to a minimum.

I really liked the previous micra! I nearly bought one like 3 times.

So cheap!

Not as much as my mother! She had six, all the way from K10 to K12.

I remembered yesterday that Nissan makes not one, not two, not three, but four sedans for the US (Versa, Sentra, Altima, Maxima). That’s a more sedans than the big three domestic automakers combined!

Nissan really needs to start actually discontinuing old gens when they come out with new ones. Sure, the tooling may become more paid for, but they’re probably cannibalizing the newer gens and cheapening the brand as a whole. In any case, any new gen should be better than the old one in * every way*, including manufacturing efficiency,  completely making it obsolete. The fact that the old gens stick around just shows their new product isn’t all that improved. They need to consolidate this mess asap.

Can you guess how many sedan Nissan models is Finland currently getting? The answer is zero. The only non-CUV/van/pickup models that Nissan offers here are Leaf, Micra, “new Juke” and 370Z. Even GT-R has vanished from the price lists but maybe you could still order one. I guess they have given up as it would very expensive.

This comparison between the French and Finnish Nissan prices reveals how our CO2 based import taxes bite the thirsty cars. But our tax system doesn’t favor the EVs in similar way than the French one. The Juke’s price is still exactly the same .

That’s interesting. I can’t get exactly the same layout but here’s our equivalent. No 370Z!

My post is being delivered by ENV200 as and from now.

To see how an EV friendly market with huge EV incentives looks:

It amazed me how much those cars seemed to blend together. Hard to tell them apart unless you’re looking for it.

I’m rather surprised they’re putting the cube out to pasture. I thought that always sold well in Japan.

X-T rail and the EVs seem to be the only ones in your market that are cheaper than they are here. Weird that Norway is still getting 370Z roadsters too but France isn’t.

Thoughts:

Skyline: Infiniti Q50 with a GTR-esque emotion grill is gorgeous and should be the universal design for that car.

Cima: O nce again a more beautiful car than what we get. The design actually works as a whole, front and rear. Sure it looks slightly dated but I’ m ok with that because it an actually good looking car.

Livina: Why did I cli ck that link!! Im now cleaning vomit out of my keyboard.

This is some FANTASTIC Oppo! Great work!

How did you survive researching for (presumably) hours to discover the differences between so many unfamiliar blandmo biles? Still interes ting to see that Nissan’s lineup is even more outdated in its  home country (that like never happens in Japan).

Luckily for me, the research is where I find the most fun, discovering new models, or that they still sell that car, and trying to make sense o ut of chaos . T he difficult part is compiling all that info into word , and figuring out what on Earth to write about for the more generic cars.

The Cube apparently used to be Nissan’s best selling model , but I think its mainly because its just so damn old, so sales aren’t there to justify a new one.
